Reporting a measurement problem

Please include five details: your browser and version; your operating system; the display you used, its resolution and scaling setting; the exact readout text; and the reference object, edge and orientation you matched. The readout's calibration state helps distinguish an uncalibrated or stale ruler from a measurement problem. If the tool refused a reference or setting, copy its full message so the reason can be checked.

If you have compared a reading with a physical ruler, include both readings and the distance compared. Those numbers help with checking the ruler's arithmetic. Keep hard or abrasive objects away from the display.

Correcting a dimension, calculation or source

The site publishes source clauses and calculations so you can check its dimensional figures, including how tolerances in millimeters become percentages. Please report a misread tolerance, an incorrectly calculated band or a source that no longer supports the text, with the page and figure involved. These are defects to correct; an understated error band is particularly serious.

You can also suggest a reference object, a missing length or unit, or a page that is difficult to use on your screen. A new reference object needs a dimensional tolerance in a published source before it can be offered. Please include that source if you have one.

What support cannot look up

Your calibration. The record is stored only in your browser on your device. There is no account, database or server-side copy to recover. If the record is lost, you will need to calibrate again with a suitable ID-1 card; emailing support cannot restore it.

Your screen's real density. The browser does not report the physical dimensions needed to determine it. The methodology page explains why reported resolution and device tables are not used as a calibration. If you send the numbers from your own measurement, the calculation can be checked.

Please do not email photographs of your card

Please describe the reference object rather than send a photograph. There is no image upload or camera access on the site, and no calibration step needs a picture. A bank card, ID card or driving license is suitable only if it conforms to the ID-1 standard; not every card with one of those names does. If you email us, your address is used only to reply and is not added to any list; the privacy policy covers the rest.
